EMS Ltd was approached by Marc Wild, group health and safety manager for Survival Systems International. Survival Systems international is an innovative lifeboat manufacturer that specialises in providing solutions for maritime evacuations.
Survival Systems International operates worldwide, and has offices in locations including Singapore, California, Dubai and Malaysia. To this date, their products have successfully helped evacuate over 2000 offshore personal in emergency incidents.
Marc had approached EMS Ltd to help him raise environmental standards with Survival Systems International. Although the company had an existing environmental policy and environmental procedures, Marc felt as though several improvements could be made.
EMS Ltd recommended the NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management for Marc. The NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management is a 5 day environmental training course. The course is designed to assist managers and supervisors who have a responsibility for managing environmental risks as part of their day to day role. The course covers topics such as environmental managements systems and impact assessments, sources and use of energy and energy efficiency, controls of pollution and planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies.
Marc took part in the course in June and took his newfound knowledge back to Survival Systems International and began work on improving their current environmental standards. Marc began by working on the company’s environmental policy. Although existing procedures were in place, Marc’s updated version contained a number of improvements. This included a new emergency response plan, a responsibility roster, and procedure flow charts. Marc also linked the environmental policy to the company’s environmental management system manual by referencing procedures like risk assessments, and spill response. Marc also created a new impact and aspect matrix and updated the existing aspects register.
Aside from procedure updates, Marc also worked on improving companywide environmental awareness. This was important to spread the knowledge obtained on the course, and ensure that all of the relevant employees were equipped to deal with an environmental incident. Marc ran internal training sessions to brief staff on the importance of environmental issues. He also made staff aware of the relevant policies and procedures, and how to access them.
Finally, Marc used this opportunity to re-engage all current suppliers and contractors in order to make a record of their environmental permits and licenses. After a fantastic effort, and a number of serious updates Survival Systems International scored a 2.8 in their FPAL audit.
The NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management proved extremely educative for Marc Wild of Survival Systems International. The course contained a surplus of information that Marc was able to implement in “real-world” scenarios within the business.
