European Aeronautic Defence & Security (EADS) Defence and Security Systems

Up until December 2001, Cogent Defence Systems operated as a subsidiary of Nortel Networks UK Ltd. The business was then transferred to EADS Telecom. In 2003, EADS acquired all the equity in Cogent Defence and Security Networks (CDSN) and restructured its defence interests. Now known as EADS Defence and Security Systems Ltd, the Company is the Systems House for EADS in the UK employing over 900 people. Headquartered in Newport, South Wales, with a growing reputation as the partner of choice in the defence and homeland security markets.

Environmental Monitoring Solutions (EMS) Ltd became involved with EADS in 2001 when we were appointed by Steve Chick the EHS Manager to carry out a full environmental review of the Newport premises to determine any significant environmental aspects and impacts.

EMS made recommendations to improve compliance with legislation and the company's existing Environmental Management System. EADS was pleased with the recommendations that EMS made and asked us to implement them. Our involvement grew and by 2003 we had staff seconded to EADS to provide environmental expertise and manage the maintenance of the Environmental Management System. Projects included audits in all aspects of their environmental management, planned inspections, support and training of staff on environmental issues, implemented effective systems to ensure compliance with the Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006 and applicable waste management regulations.

By 2006 EMS had 2 staff permanently based at EADS headquarters. Eventually in 2007 we assisted in the hand-over to their newly appointed environmental advisors to handle the day-today environmental issues. EMS now consults with EADS on an ad-hoc basis to ensure that EADS are continually up-to-date with current best practice.

What EADS say…

"I would like to confirm that a recent BSI Audit resulted in no Non Conformance and, more impressively, no observation statements, other than a congratulatory message from the BSI auditor that he had been totally impressed and could not offer even one recommendation by way of observation. This is a tremendous result for our company and was made possible because of the hard work and effort of EADS EHS team, with EMS working in close co-operation with our internal staff. Well done."
