Continuous Emissions Monitoring
EMS provides the specification, installation, commissioning and long-term contracted monitoring and maintenance services for clients including William Cook, Hanson Aggregates, Weir Minerals and Honda. We also supply a range of continuous emissions monitors.

Background
Consents are issued as part of Environmental Permits for Part A(1), Part A(2), and Part B processes. Self-monitoring is undertaken in accordance with industry- and process-specific guidance notes, either:
- periodic iso-kinetic testing
- indicative continuous emissions monitoring (bag failure detection)
- quantitive continuous emissions monitoring (MCERTS approved monitoring)
Iso-Kinetic Testing
Iso-kinetic testing is required to determine initial conditions; base levels of emissions, gravimetric weight of particulate for the later calibration of continuous emissions monitors. Periodic iso-kinetic testing may suffice for low impact Part B processes where continuous emissions monitoring is deemed unnecessary.
EMS can provide iso-kinetic testing:
- to assess emissions levels and characteristics as part of specifying monitoring equipment requirements
- for equipment calibration
- or as part of annual testing for low impact processes
Continuous Emissions Monitoring: Indicative
Indicative continuous emissions monitoring is required to monitor filter performance and detect bag failure. This usually satisfies the requirements for monitoring Part B processes. Instruments are configured to issue and log alarms. Depending on site protocols, this data is centralised and localised for action by appropriate operatives.
Continuous Emissions Monitoring: Quantitive
Under the PPC element of the Environmental Permitting Regulations, what are considered to be more polluting emissions are subject to quantitive continuous emissions monitoring. Particulate concentrations are continuously monitored and logged remotely. As with indicative monitoring, instruments are configured to issue and log alarms, and additionally log particulate concentrations with time. Data is managed for appropriate action by site operatives in response to alarms.
