Congratulations to Gary on his first publication!

Huge congratulations to our Technical Manager, Gary Thursfield, who has been acknowledged on his first publication. The Journal paper, ‘Field trials of the MANTIS system for water pumps in Sierra Leone and the Gambia’ has been published online in the ICE Journal of Water Management.

This paper has been written around the MANTIS™ (Monitoring and Analytics to Improve Service) project and has been produced in conjunction with Dr Andy Swan of Leeds Beckett University, along with Prof Pete Skipworth and Dr Louise Walker from EMS.

MANTIS™ is a low-cost pump monitoring technology, intended for use in the developing world. Many hand-operated water pumps across sub-Saharan Africa break down prematurely, remaining out of service for long periods of time and consequently leaving communities without a nearby source of water. Monitoring these remote water pumps can help to address this issue, but traditionally would require regular visits to remote locations. MANTIS™ uses a simple, online, remote monitoring technology which sends the operational status of hand pumps via SMS text message to an online platform - enabling rapid detection of issues for quick and efficient repairs.

This paper introduces the field trials of the MANTIS™ system which have been conducted in Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
