Trade Effluent Monitoring

Trade Effluent MonitoringEMS provides specification, installation, commissioning and long-term contracted monitoring and maintenance services for a long list of household names including Smith and Nephew, Novartis Vaccines, Cooplands Bakeries, Ferrybridge Power Station, Greencore Foods, Heinz, Warburtons, Bostik, Cott, Pukka Pies, A G Barr, Pork Farms.

The monitoring of trade effluent discharges can include the continuous measurement of flow, pH and temperature and the automatic collection of flow paced samples, i.e. more samples are taken during periods of high flow in order to produce representative composite samples. We specify, supply and install integrated systems to satisfy any monitoring requirements.

It is essential that the equipment used should be robust, reliable and accurate in order to demonstrate compliance with discharge consents and provide data for billing purposes. We are a leading supplier of this type of equipment.

Flow Monitoring

The monitoring of trade effluent discharges normally requires the installation of a primary measuring device – a weir or flume - and a secondary device - a flow meter.

Trade effluent discharges usually vary in relation to process changes and can include very low flows. EMS are experts is selecting the appropriate device for the situation which varies with the type of effluent and flow rate / range.

Sampling

Flow samples must be available from the previous 24 hour period for testing at any time by the consenting authority. Automatic samplers are used to satisfy this requirement In order to prevent bacteriological degradation of samples it may be necessary to consider the refrigeration of samples.

Base on the requirements of the client and the consenting authority, EMS will select the most economic viable option. In England and Wales, EMS specify and supply MCERTS certified automatic samplers in line with the current requirements of the EA.

pH and Temperature Monitoring

As part of a consent, the continuous measurement of pH and temperature may be required. Probes which integrate with he flow meter and sampler arrangement are supplied for this purpose.

Maintenance

In order to obtain accurate and reliable data, flow monitoring equipment must be regularly maintained.  Neglect of this type of equipment is common and can result in higher trade effluent charges or even fines and reduced equipment life.  Maintenance schedules are tailored to client’s particular requirement.
