Key areas

Many operations may fall under environmental permitting requirements.

Emissions to water

Manufacturing facilities that produce effluent, or where contamination of cooling or process water may occur are typically regulated due to the risk of water pollution. Waste, mining, and farming operations that release leachate may also require an environmental permit.

Emissions to air

Energy generation, metal production, chemical manufacturing, and waste incineration can release significant levels of air pollution. Smaller operations may also be regulated due to emission of air pollutants, such as spraying, coating, and cleaning processes.

Land contamination

Waste management, materials storage at manufacturing or processing facilities, mining, quarrying, and agriculture may be regulated due to the potential for harmful substances to come into contact with soil and/or groundwater.
